Grand Canyon

Today we took our time getting up knowing that we had booked 2 nights at the campground  and we would NOT have to drive later.  When we went outside to the picnic table to eat breakfast, we had a visitor, a mule deer was about 100 feet away just munching away.  Maddie started to take pictures of it and it started following her.

Doug and I are both amazed at how the campground is so empty.  There are several spaces unoccupied. From all of our research about camping here we head that it was always full.

After breakfast we went to the visitors center where we saw a movie about how the canyon was formed.  Then we took the bus to the rail station and walked along the rim taking pictures and enjoying the scenery.

We made it to the El Tovar Hotel.  We were all a bit hungry so we decided to have a nice lunch and we had an awesome view of the canyon. Afterwards we sat in on a ranger talk about bees that was just outside of the hotel.  We then toured the Hopi House, where we saw some remarkable Indian Crafted jewelry, weaving, and pottery.

Our next stop was the Vercamp's Visitors Center, where we learned more about the history of the Grand Canyon National Park.  It was very interesting to see how much the park has changed and tourism has increased over the years.

We then went for another hike around the rim for about a half mile.  Hailey and Doug had a great time teasing me about my fear of heights and pretending to jump and fall over the side.  It was a beautiful walk and fun family time.

Our next stop was the Lookout Studio for another ranger talk about the California Condor.  That was very interesting, I even think the girls gained something from that.  The Ranger who was giving the talk was very passionate about the birds and had several props and display items to make the lecture more interesting.

After a quick dinner at the campsite we went to the 8:30 evening program at the amphitheater and learned about mules and their history at Grand Canyon.

Now we are watching another storm roll in and the lightening is lighting the sky up pretty bright.  The bandwidth here stinks and I have lost patience adding any more pictures to this tonight.
